Do you know of a source for data on Southern Cities before World War II? I want to look at racial residential segregation during the interwar period in Houston, Little Rock, Atlanta and Raleigh. I do not want to rely on ward data, since the size, shape, and number of wards within each city changed often during this period.

I am not aware of easily available data at that level of geography for Houston or Harris County.

If you go to the NHGIS website

It has summary data available from 1790+. The choices for tracted data for 1910 are: Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania

For 1920 it is: Illinois, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Wisconsin

For 1930 it is: California, DC, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Wisconsin

I know an historian wrote about Detroit in the 1920s (Kevin Boyle) Arc of Justice. That happens to be a city that has tracted data, although his book doesn’t draw on those data much.
