Q:

I am looking for the total number of births (no rates), 1975-present, by state. I need for this to be in electronic form if possible.

A:

CDC Wonder has 1995 to 2006 online:

http://wonder.cdc.gov/natality.html

However, you can get counts of births clear back to 1979 via a back door.

Go to the compressed mortality file:

http://wonder.cdc.gov/mortSQL.html

In your query, limit the 'age' to Under 1 year and ask for your results to be by state. You can get 1979-1998 in one pass and 1999+ in the other.

You will get 4 columns in the results: state, count, population, and crude rate. The first column is # of infant deaths, the second column is the # of births, and the final column is the infant mortality rate.

You will have to use the published natality volumes for 1975-1978.
