Q:  

I have some raw data without any set-up cards. Can you remind me how to read in data with stata?

If you ever misplace this, the easiest way to get a new template is to run a nonsense extract at IPUMS and get a few variables and cases and use the stata setup from that request as your template.

The example I provide has enough different data types (int, float, and byte) that it should cover the requirements of your data. The example also shows how to put tags on the variables (e.g., 1-Male, 2-Female), etc.

To invoke the job, put the do file and the data file in the same directory. Click on the *do file from Windows.

Type save sipp and you'll have a sipp.dta file.
