DSDR KB:
I am interested in surveys with the question "Have you ever been divorced?" as opposed to the question "What is your current marital status?" I am interested in this at the state and sub-state level.
The Census Bureau used to ask that sort of question---indirectly at least. They asked:
Has this person been married more than once? Did the first marriage end because of the death of the husband (or wife)?
The 'how many times married' was asked from 1940 - 1980 as well as in 1910.
The widow question was only asked in 1970 and 1980.
I'm not sure which if any of these items made it to summary file data, but you could certainly look at this by state and sub-state geography via the county-group code in the microdata files.
