The PSID has created a Family Identification and Mapping System (FIMS):

It allows one to create identifiers for intra-generational samples (e.g., siblings) or inter-generational (individual to parent; individual to grandparent; individual to great grandparent).

One can also control the biological nature of the relationship, e.g., full siblings; half siblings, dad in common; etc.

PSID has also created several tutorials on how to create and analyze intergernational data in its tutorial center:
